A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is the primary document connecting a physical material to its analytical verification. For research materials, the COA is the foundation of reproducibility: it tells you what the material is, how pure it is, and which batch it came from.
Start with identity confirmation. Most peptide COAs rely on mass spectrometry to confirm that the measured molecular weight matches the theoretical value for the stated sequence. A match here confirms you are working with the intended compound.
Next, examine purity. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separates the sample into its component peaks; the main peak's area relative to total area yields the purity figure. A value of ≥99% indicates that nearly all detected material corresponds to the target compound.
Finally, note the lot number and test date. These tie the document to a specific production batch. When documenting your own work, recording the lot number alongside your results preserves traceability — any future question about the material can be resolved against the same COA you reviewed before purchase.
